As life slows down, I’ve been noticing the birds singing more. They’re always right there in my backyard...sharing this little lot of land with me...but how often am I still enough to notice them? The rhythm of the birds hasn’t changed at all. They continue on as they did before #COVID-19. And I can’t help but remember Jesus’s words about the birds. Do what the birds do. Life is more than money, security, worries. It’s often those things that distract us from really living. All we ever really have is this moment right now. The birds know no “good and bad”. They know no time. All they know of life is now. Maybe in this season, we get curious about how the birds live life. “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you shall eat or what you shall drink, nor about your body, what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? And which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭6:25-27‬ ‭RSV‬‬ #returningtoeden
I don’t know how else to say it. She was. For #internationalwomensday I want to highlight her bravery...because honestly, I’ve never heard a man do it...especially from the pulpit. The preaching usually leaves us to believe Jesus was completely abandoned by his followers. Guess what? He wasn’t. He was abandoned by the male followers. The women stayed. Mary Magdalene is mentioned in all four Gospels as one of several Galilean women who followed Jesus and supported him and the other disciples out of their personal means (Matthew 27:55-56; Mark 15:40-41; Luke 8:2-3). John 19:25 places her at the foot of the cross with Jesus’ mother. She, with other women, witnesses the burial of Jesus (Mark 15:47; Matthew 27:60-61; Luke 23:50-24:10). Matthew (28:1-10) and John (20:11-18) portray her as first witness to the resurrection, as does Mark’s secondary ending (16:9). In both Matthew and John, Jesus commissions her to tell the other disciples about the resurrection (Matthew 28:10; John 20:17; see also Mark 16:10). All four Gospels show Mary Magdalene leading the group of women who at no small risk to themselves accompanied Jesus through the passion, crucifixion, death, burial and resurrection. As a woman, it was deeply moving to me to realize that the women did not flee in fear as the men did, and did not abandon Jesus. In the Catholic Church, Mary Magdalene is called “The Apostle to the Apostles”. Let me be clear. This is not a slam on men. We all probably would have fled. What I am saying is that it is cowardly and an abuse of power to not give MM her rightful place in the story, to dismiss her as a prostitute (SHE WASN’T—like at all), to twist scripture to mean women can’t speak or preach or lead. Because hello—-Jesus clearly thought this woman should speak, preach and lead. Thank you to the men who bravely speak up for women, listen to woman and advocate for women-even when you have something to lose.
